Sheikh Hasina Wazed Resigns as Bangladesh Prime Minister
Bangladesh's Long-Serving Leader Flees Amidst Unrest
Amidst escalating anti-government protests, Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country. Her departure marks the end of her more than two decades of rule.
Sheikh Hasina, 75, was Bangladesh's longest-serving prime minister, leading the country since 2009. Her resignation comes after weeks of deadly protests sparked by allegations of electoral fraud in the December 2022 general election.
The protests, which grew increasingly violent, resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries. In an effort to quell the unrest, Hasina called for fresh elections, but opposition leaders rejected the offer and demanded her resignation.
On Monday, Hasina tendered her resignation to President Abdul Hamid and fled Bangladesh for an undisclosed location. The whereabouts of her son, Sajeeb Wazed, who served as her de facto prime minister, are also unknown.
