Tiafoe wins all-American epic
Frances Tiafoe won an all-American epic against Ben Shelton 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday night to reach the third round of the US Open.
It was a match full of big serves, powerful groundstrokes and breathtaking athleticism. Tiafoe, the No. 22 seed, was able to edge out Shelton, the No. 125-ranked qualifier, in the end by being more consistent and making fewer unforced errors.
Tiafoe will next face No. 14 seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in the third round.
Gauff and Zheng also through
Coco Gauff and Zheng Qinwen also advanced to the third round of the US Open on Thursday with straight-sets wins.
Gauff, the No. 12 seed, defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania 6-2, 7-6 (4). Gauff will next face Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic in the third round.
Zheng, the No. 30 seed, defeated Greet Minnen of Belgium 6-4, 6-0. Zheng will next face No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland in the third round.
