USD Volleyball Drops Season Opener to SMU in Hawaii
Toreros Fall in Four Sets to Mustangs
USD Volleyball began its 2023 season with a 4-set loss to SMU on Friday in an out-of-conference match-up at the Outrigger Volleyball Challenge in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Toreros (0-1) fell 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19 to the Mustangs (1-0). The loss ended USD’s four-match winning streak over SMU.
USD was led by junior outside hitter Grace Mitchell, who had a team-high 12 kills. Freshman outside hitter Ellie Geer added 10 kills, and junior middle blocker Grace Froehlich had 9 kills.
SMU was led by junior outside hitter Jazmine Sneed, who had 17 kills. Senior middle blocker Caroline Young added 13 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Allison Hughes had 10 kills.
The Toreros hit .184 (44-23-158) as a team, while the Mustangs hit .245 (57-20-143). USD had 7 aces, while SMU had 4 aces.
USD will return to action on Saturday when it takes on host Hawaii at 10 p.m. ET.
